Autumn in New York...
Why does it seem so inviting?
Maybe it’s from watching too many 90s romcom, but for the past couple of years, I’ve come to romanticize autumn in New York. Although I’ve lived in Jersey for 4 years at university, the fall foliage on campus was already beautiful and satisfied me enough that I’d never felt the need to go the city just to experience a season. Princeton had already fulfilled the mood of what’s called “dark academia autumn.“
After graduating from college, I had missed Texas terribly and thought I’d never want to go back to New England, but I guess we always want what we can’t have. Once I was missing Texas, and then I was feeling nostalgic for a New England fall.
The pandemic had delayed my yearning for New York back a couple years, but this autumn, I flew from Texas to NYC just to fulfill this little dream of mine.
My parents, having not traveled since 2019, decided to join me, and we brought my family’s two 10.5 months pups, mimi & momo, along. This was their first time seeing New York, and their first time traveling. It was also my first time being back in NYC since 5 years!
Our first stop on our first full day in NYC was the iconic Central Park, which apparently is the most filmed location in the world! Not sure if that’s true, but it is no wonder from all the New York romance stories I’ve read and watched, that I’ve come to romanticize the place. Now, I would say I’m not unfamiliar with the city: I’ve subleased an apartment before in Greenwich Village, but the 5-story-walkup, along with the location, left me feeling like NYC wasn’t my place. I realize that many people would be happy to live in Greenwich, but for me, having grown up in Texas, I need some trees, some grass, and some greenspace to feel at home. But… I digress.
I’m not usually much of a planner. That is, unless I’m very passionate or eager for something, and I was eager for this trip, so I made an exception and planned ahead. Weeks ahead of time, I’d envisioned the aesthetic and mood I was going to achieve wit my look and photoshoot, down to the little details from where exactly in Central Park I was to shoot – to the outfit I was going to wear on the day.

To fulfill the aesthetic and outfit I had envisioned, I needed a couple of new additions to my wardrobe, which meant shopping, and to be honest, shopping sometimes is fun, but when shopping for something specific, it’s just a lot of work. It took me forever to find the perfect plaid skirt, which one day I got lucky and found, of all places, on Amazon: this plaid skirt by Tommy Hilfiger. I even had to search several places for a simple brown turtleneck, which I found at the mall. I already had the boots from Tommy Hilfiger from Fall ’17, and the earrings were gifted to me by Monica Vinader.
